Pipeline Strainers: Protecting Downstream Valves & Pumps from Particulate Contamination
API 598 Tested • Precision Industrial Flow Control Specification

In any newly commissioned or mature piping system, foreign particles—including weld slag, rust scale, pipe tape, and gasket fragments—pose an existential threat to precision machined valve seats and high-speed pump impellers. Pipeline Strainers serve as the frontline defense against equipment degradation.

Y-Type vs. Basket POT Strainers

Pipeline strainers are primarily classified into two mechanical architectures:

  • Y-Type Strainers: Named for their angled body geometry, Y-strainers are compact and capable of installation in both horizontal and vertical downward pipelines. They feature a threaded blow-off port in the screen cover, allowing in-line blowdown cleaning without opening the body.
  • Basket POT Strainers: Feature a vertical canister chamber containing a drop-in cylindrical screen basket. Offers much larger filtration surface area and higher dirt-holding capacity, minimizing pressure loss in high-debris liquid circuits.

Mesh Sizing & Differential Pressure Monitoring

Strainer screens are manufactured from heavy-duty AISI 304/316 stainless steel with custom perforation sizes (typically 1.5mm to 3mm) backed by fine wire mesh ranging from 20 mesh down to 400 mesh (37 microns).

Differential pressure gauges should always be installed across the inlet and outlet nozzles. When differential pressure exceeds 0.5 Bar (7 PSI), operators know the basket requires immediate cleaning to prevent flow choking or screen collapse.
